{"id":5022,"date":"2017-07-02T07:41:14","date_gmt":"2017-07-02T11:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/?p=5022"},"modified":"2017-07-02T07:41:14","modified_gmt":"2017-07-02T11:41:14","slug":"the-hidden-cost-of-headstone-hunting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/02\/the-hidden-cost-of-headstone-hunting\/","title":{"rendered":"The hidden cost of headstone hunting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy headstone hunting for several reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a bit of a treasure hunt &#8211; I always feel great when I find an old headstone marking an ancestor&#8217;s gravesite.<\/li>\n<li>It is esthetically pleasing &#8211; most of the old cemeteries are quite scenic.<\/li>\n<li>It is free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, <em>almost<\/em> free. As I discovered a couple of weeks ago, there is a hidden cost to headstone hunting.<\/p>\n<p>On a sunny day I wear my sunglasses which are just clip-ons for my prescription glasses.\u00a0 When I need to look closely at a headstone I take them off and hang them in the collar of my shirt.\u00a0 They are pretty secure there and if for some reason they slip out, I feel and\/or hear them fall.<\/p>\n<p>So I spent about 90 minutes at the Highland Cemetery in Ipswich recently. And while the day was sunny the cemetery was mostly shaded.\u00a0 I took my glasses off at the start and didn&#8217;t put them on until I had finished walking the cemetery, which covered over an acre.\u00a0 Or, more to the point, I tried to put them on but they weren&#8217;t there.\u00a0 I had lost my glasses somewhere in the acre of headstones.<\/p>\n<p>I spent an additional 30 minutes retracing my route, carefully scanning the grass. Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of replacing the glasses: about $400.<\/p>\n<p>I will henceforth leave the glasses in the truck and use cheap non-prescription sunglasses if it is sunny.<\/p>\n<p>Some lessons are learned the hard way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy headstone hunting for several reasons: It is a bit of a treasure hunt &#8211; I always feel great when I find an old headstone marking an ancestor&#8217;s gravesite.
