{"id":6530,"date":"2018-09-01T08:57:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-01T12:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/?p=6530"},"modified":"2019-03-11T10:28:32","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T14:28:32","slug":"st-anthonys-feast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/01\/st-anthonys-feast\/","title":{"rendered":"St Anthony&#8217;s Feast"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6531\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6531\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6531\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6531\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Copping a squat on the Greenway\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ourwanderyears.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/0824181304_HDR-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Copping a squat on the Greenway<\/p><\/div>\n<p>St Anthony&#8217;s Feast is an annual event in the Italian North End of Boston.\u00a0 We like to attend, primarily for the food but also it is a darn good excuse to get into the city on one of the last summer weekends &#8211; it is always scheduled for the last weekend before Labor Day.\u00a0 This year we went on Friday, to avoid the weekend crowds.\u00a0 The weather cooperated by being clear, warm and not too humid.<\/p>\n<p>We parked the car at the Alewife T station and took the subway in.\u00a0 For years this was my regular commute, so it was very comfortable for me.\u00a0 Jett, on the other hand, hated it.\u00a0 I believe her comment was &#8220;I can&#8217;t believe that you could stand this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We took the Red Line to Downtown Crossing and changed to the Orange Line for 2 stops to Haymarket.\u00a0 Being Friday, the open-air fruit and vegetable market was operating.\u00a0 We bought a few things on our return trip &#8211; cheap asparagus ($1) and some nectarines.\u00a0 There is a reason that the produce is so cheap: it is all nearing the &#8220;sell by&#8221; date.\u00a0 We ended up discarding the asparagus.\u00a0 The nectarines were eaten, but they, too, were past their prime.<\/p>\n<p>The North End is separated from downtown Boston by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rose_Fitzgerald_Kennedy_Greenway\">Rose Kennedy Greenway<\/a>, a very nice strip of parkland built over the underground expressway the resulted from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Dig\">Big Dig<\/a>. We ordered the fried artichokes as an appetizer (excellent!) and split a chicken piccata entr\u00e9e (the best I have ever had).\u00a0 We dined <em>al fresco<\/em> and watched the fair traffic as we dined.\u00a0 It was a very nice lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Jett still tires easily and we had to stop frequently to rest. That was just fine with me as my sciatica was making walking painful. Just a couple of old people dottering their way through the Feast.<\/p>\n<p>I was happy to see, when we got back to our car, that no chunks of concrete had fallen on it. The Alewife Garage is now closed evenings and weekends for emergency repairs as the concrete is deteriorating badly and chunks have, in fact, fallen on cars. No one has been injured, though.
